What is BNB Chain?

BNB Chain is an umbrella name for three connected networks built around the BNB token. The main one is BNB Smart Chain, commonly called BSC, an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain. The second is opBNB, a Layer 2 optimistic rollup built on top of BSC for transactions that need to be even cheaper and faster. The third is BNB Greenfield, a decentralised storage network designed for applications that need to store large amounts of data on-chain.

Together, these three form an ecosystem that handles everything from DeFi trading and lending to data storage for Web3 applications. BNB is the gas token across all of them.

BNB Smart Chain vs Binance Chain vs opBNB

These names confuse, so it is worth being precise.

Binance Chain was the original blockchain launched in April 2019. It was fast and simple, but not programmable. It could handle token transfers and a basic DEX, nothing more complex.

BNB Smart Chain launched in September 2020 alongside Binance Chain, as a separate but parallel network. It was EVM-compatible from the start, meaning Ethereum smart contracts could be deployed on it without modification. When the rebrand happened in February 2022, Binance Chain became BNB Beacon Chain, and BNB Smart Chain became the primary network. BNB Beacon Chain was later deprecated in 2024.

opBNB is the Layer 2 built on top of BSC using optimistic rollup technology. It processes transactions off the main chain and posts proofs back to BSC, achieving higher throughput and lower fees than the base layer. Fees on opBNB regularly sit below $0.001 per transaction.

Why BNB Chain is EVM compatible and what that means

EVM compatibility means BNB Smart Chain runs the same Ethereum Virtual Machine that Ethereum does. A smart contract written in Solidity for Ethereum deploys on BSC without any changes to the code. MetaMask connects to BSC by adding a custom RPC endpoint, which takes about 30 seconds to configure. Development tools like Hardhat and Foundry work on BSC exactly as they do on Ethereum.

For developers, this meant that in 2020 and 2021, when Ethereum fees were extremely high, the entire codebase of Ethereum DeFi could be copied, deployed on BSC, and made available to users at a fraction of the cost. That is exactly what happened. PancakeSwap is a direct fork of Uniswap v2. Venus is a fork of Compound. Neither required significant new development to launch.

This lowered the barrier to entry for BSC enormously and drove rapid ecosystem growth. It also drew criticism that BSC's ecosystem was derivative rather than original, a debate that continues.

Top dApps on BNB Chain

PancakeSwap is the largest DEX on BNB Chain and one of the largest in all of DeFi by trading volume. It handles token swaps, liquidity provision, and yield farming, and has expanded into perpetual trading. Venus is the leading lending protocol on BSC, allowing users to supply assets and borrow against collateral similarly to how Aave works on Ethereum. Trust Wallet, which Binance acquired in 2018, is deeply integrated with BSC and makes it easy for retail users to connect to BNB Chain dApps directly from their phones.

BNB Chain also has significant memecoin and gaming activity, driven by low transaction fees that make small-value transactions practical in a way they are not on the Ethereum mainnet.

BNB Chain's 2026 roadmap to sub-second finality

BNB Chain's current block time sits at around three seconds. The 2026 roadmap targets sub-second finality, which would put it in the same performance range as Solana. The TPS target is 20,000 transactions per second on the base layer, a significant increase from the current throughput.

Other items on the roadmap include BAP-578, a new AI-agent token standard designed for autonomous on-chain agents, and an integration with Amazon Web Services to support stablecoin payments at the enterprise level. Whether these targets are met on the stated timeline remains to be seen, but the direction is clear: BNB Chain is pushing toward higher performance and institutional relevance simultaneously.
